AmeriCorps VISTA - Ready to Learn
Date of Appointment: July 29, 2014 - August 1, 2015
The YWCA Mankato’s mission is eliminating racism and empowering women and promoting peace, justice and dignity for all. The YWCA has been a leader in the local community for over 87 years. It currently provides programs that focus on leadership development, cultural competence, and empowering girls. The YWCA serves 3,000 people a year and touches 10,000 more through media programs. The YWCA Mankato is unique and one of only four YWCA's in Minnesota. The Ready to Learn program helps prepare immigrant and refugee children for kindergarten. It utilizes trained volunteers to provide educational and developmental activities for children ages birth-5 years. Most of these volunteers are longstanding community members or college students in the community. This program not only benefits the family but also connects the volunteers to a community with whom they might not otherwise interact. A VISTA member will help the program become stable and increase the number of participants. The VISTA will have a great impact on the immigrant and refugee community.
